Lucio Mariani and Arthur Evans, who advised Harriet Boyd to start exploration at Anavlochos, are among the early visitors of the ridge. But the first excavations were carried out by French archaeologist Pierre Demargne, under the auspices of the French School at Athens. From August 19th to August 23rd 1929, Demargne cleaned or excavated seven terraces in the settlement of the central valley (A), a series of small ruined graves below at Lami (B) and on the North slope of the North-western peak, at a place called Kako Plaï, he collected numerous fragments of Protogeometric-Classical pottery and teracottas (C). This material was recently restudied by Oliver Pilz and Michaël Krumme.
In 1990, a one-week survey of the massif was conducted by the French School. Between 2006 and 2014, several rescue excavations have been undertaken by the Greek archaeological Service (Ephorate of Lasithi), in the settlement, the necropolis and on the peak of Vigla.
The French School at Athens resumed work at Anavlochos in 2015. See the work conducted by the Anavlochos Project since 2015.
